Chocolate Hazelnut Spread (referred to under the brand name Nutella) has exploded in popularity as of late and if you walk into any grocery store you’re bound to find unlimited chocolate hazelnut spread options. You see mentions of Nutella on social channels on an everyday basis and it seems as though some folks have adopted chocolate hazelnut spread as a replacement for peanut butter, at least here in the United States. In addition to Nutella there are, at the least, twelve other brands for sale in the United State including the products we reviewed below, with recent additions by JIF and Hershey.
In an older post we even advocated making your own chocolate hazelnut spread, which like most food types is the best version you can feed yourself and your family. Nevertheless, if you must buy off the shelf, here are some of the current options with our recommended choices showing a “good” or “very good” rating:
- Peccati di Ciacco Gianduia Chocolate Hazelnut Spread (very good – a bit sweet for our taste buds, but a good balance of flavors)
- Ferrero brand Nutella
- Safeway Select Hazelnut Spread
- Azienda Agricola Nocciole d’Elite Crema di Nocciola (very good – nice hazelnut flavor and a bit “looser” in consistency than most brands; expensive.)
- Ferrero brand Nutella
- Justin’s Chocolate Hazelnut Butter Blend (very good – one of the more nutritious offerings and easily found in most markets)
- Rapunzel brand Organic Chocolate Hazelnut Butter
- Rigoni di Asiago Nocciolata (good)
- Jif brand Chocolate Flavored Hazelnut Spread
- Wegmans brand Hazel‘Nuttin Chocolate Flavored Hazelnut Spread
- Giant brand Hazelnut Spread With Cocoa
- Natural Nectar ChocoDream Hazelnut Cocoa Spread
- Hershey’s Spreads, Chocolate With Hazelnut
- Merenda
- Cocoa Haze! (good)
From a nutritional perspective, chocolate hazelnut spread isn’t something you want to integrate into your diet on any consistent basis. We see the spread, even the home made variety, as a treat one should consume no more tha 1-3 months times per month. Sugar and palm oil is often a key ingredient with many of the brands listed above, for example, so it’s best to respect the canned chocolate hazelnut goodness.
